Liz Pohland

Liz Pohland is a watercolor artist based in both Northern Virginia and Coastal Georgia who is inspired by the emotional and visual representations of everyday moments and objects, the interplay between what is beautiful and what is not, and the way watercolor representations can change impressions. Liz has always loved to travel and paint her surroundings. She has been painting in watercolor since she was a child, and has taken watercolor classes in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Virginia. She exhibits her art both locally and throughout the state of Virginia, Maryland, and Georgia, and has won several awards. She is a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, the Virginia Watercolor Society, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Georgia Watercolor Society, and the Springfield Art Guild.

“I believe that traveling and really looking at objects in our surroundings is critical for any painter. Through my artwork, I try to bring the way I see to others. The subjects of my watercolors are often still life paintings of everyday items, landscapes and city scenes, flora and fauna, and my longtime interest in water and the ocean. While many watercolorists begin paintings with pencil sketches, I often draw with my paint, relying on my instincts and impressions about the subject and what it evokes. I enjoy using imaginative, nontraditional approaches, techniques, and materials in my work, painting on experimental papers with a mixture of products (such as nonporous or colored papers and powdered, metallic, or granulating watercolors). For me, watercolor is the ultimate medium—one that never fails to captivate me as an artist. And captivating the viewer, too, is a primary goal.”
